Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever review: the teen superstar intimately navigates misogyny, fame, and the shadows cast beside the spotlight on her sophomore release (8.5/10)
|
There’s something about Eilish’s rawness on Happier Than Ever that allows listeners to relate to these sentiments though these are feelings the average person will never know. Her worries are all stressors that most teenagers never face: invasions of privacy from the public, stalkers breaking into homes, and constant critiques from people who do not know Eilish personally. And although these battles are not relatable to the majority of Eilish’s listeners, they all feel entirely reasonable. She navigates the double standards in today's world on the one-two punch of “Not My Responsibility” and “OverHeated.” “Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach? My hips? The body I was born with / is it not what you wanted,” Eilish speaks on the former, a stark commentary on the public’s countless contradictions of females in the industry. “Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
